gold, ivory, gems, and enamel, 30.8 x 23.7 cm (12.1 x 9.3 inches)
ivory Byzantine, late tenth century, 13.4 x 12.7 cm, originally center of a triptych
metalwork west German (Rheinland) around 1020
until 1972, on an early 9th century evangeliary for which it was probably designed
reworked in 19th c., with positions of Matthew and Mark symbols exchanged
