Historical Archive: Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham
Exterior and Cloister

present building begun in 1093 under Bishop William of St Calais
choir complete by 1104, nave 1100-1133
western Galilee Chapel (Lady Chapel) 1175-89
western towers around 1200, spires removed 1658, parapets and pinnacles 1801
eastern transept 1242-90, Richard of Farnham probably master mason
central tower 1465-74, second storey around 1490, upper part refaced 1859
cloister current form late 15th c., tracery 1764-69, renovations 19th c.
entire building: outer 2 to 4 inches of weathered exterior stone removed after 1777
