Historical Archive: Lothar Cross, Cross of Lothair

gold, gems, and enamel on oak core, without base 50 cm height, 38.5 cm width, 2.3 cm depth
Rheinland, around 985; restored 1932
crossing cameo: Augustus (d. 14 CE), banded agate (sardonyx), 8 x 7 cm, soon after 20 BCE
intaglio near base: rock crystal, 4.2 x 3.6 cm, patron: Lothar II (reg. 855-869)
set with engraved side out; unengraved side roughly re-polished
retrograde inscription on seal: +XPE ADIVVA HLOTARIVM REG, Christ help King Lothar
foot: fourteenth century
