Historical Archive: Veliki Novgorod Cathedral Doors ("Door of Cherson")

46 bronze plates on wooden frame (26 panels), original order unknown
overall 360 x 240 cm (11' 9.75" x 7' 10.5")
commissioned by Alexander of Malonne, Bishop of Płock (1129-56)
made in Magdeburg under Bishop Wichmann of Magdeburg (1152-92), probably before he became Archbishop in 1154
Artists: Riquin and Waismuth in Magdeburg; Avraam later in Magdeburg or in Novgorod
in Novgorod by the mid 15th century, some additions made there
Russian inscriptions probably added 1439-50 under Archbishop Euthemius II of Novgorod
restored 1982
