Battistero di San Giovanni

Baptistery 1152-1363
first architect Diotisalvi
founding inscription August 15, 1152 (Pisan 1153)
first level and part of second complete by about 1170
east portal sculpture early 13th century
construction continued after 1277 under Nicola and then Giovanni Pisano
restored 1550-51, 1621, major restoration around 1840
Many exterior busts are 19th-century copies.

Pulpit signed and dated Nicola Pisano 1260
white and red marble, granite, height 465 cm (183 inches)
originally probably on north rather than south side
