Historical Archive: Gunhild Cross
made for Gunhild, probably daughter of King Sweyn III Grathe (d. 1157)
around 1150 or 1170-1175
walrus ivory with traces of pigment, 28.5 x 22 x 2.5 cm (11.22 x 8.67 x .98 inch)
Latin inscription on narrow sides: "Who sees me, let him pray to Christ for Helena,
daughter of King Sweyn Magnus, she who had me made in memory of the Lord's passion.
Those who believe in Christ crucified pray in memory of Liutger who carved me
at the request of Helena, who is also called Gunhild."
