Historical Archive: Gonzaga Cameo

Alexandria, third century BCE, or first century BCE to first century CE
15.7 x 11.8 cm (6.18 x 4.65 inches)
background layer of stone largely restoration, figures original; broken through necks
Ptolemy II and Arsinoë II, or two other rulers
Both this work and the one in Vienna have been nicknamed "Gonzaga cameo"
after the collector Isabella d'Este (d. 1539), wife of Duke Francesco Gonzaga of Mantua.
