Cathedral


medieval construction reuses Roman brick and flint from Verulamium
1077-1088: foundations and crossing tower built under Abbot Paul of Caen (reg. 1077-93)
1115: formal consecration December 28
1195/97: three western bays added to nave
1250: east end damaged in earthquake, rebuilt from 1257
c.1275-1300: presbytery and apse with oak vaulting, most wood dendrodated 1273-99
1323: south nave piers 5 eastern bays collapsed, rebuilt 1324-26
c.1350-1400: presbytery restored; repainted, false tiercerons added 1420-65
after 1373: crossing tower ceiling boards felled
1476-1492: large choir screen built under Abbot William Wallingford
1539: abbey dissolved
Many restorations; most extensive remaking by Edmund Beckett Lord Grimthorpe 1880s-1893
